Today we're launching GiveBetter, and we couldn't be more excited to share it with Burlington.
The idea is simple: you have stuff you don't need anymore. Somewhere in Chittenden County, a nonprofit could use the money that stuff is worth. We connect the two - for free.
How it works
You schedule a free pickup on our site. We come to your door and collect your furniture, clothing, household goods, electronics - whatever you're ready to part with. We sell those items and send the proceeds directly to a local cause you choose. That's it.
No loading your car. No driving to a drop-off. No wondering whether your donation actually made a difference.
Why Burlington, why now
Clothing is now worn only 7 to 10 times before being discarded - a decline of more than 35% in just 15 years. It takes 2,700 litres of water to produce a single cotton shirt. The cycle of buy, wear once, throw away is unsustainable. But these items still have value, and that value can do real good.
Burlington and Chittenden County are home to dozens of incredible nonprofits doing critical work - sheltering the homeless, feeding families, welcoming refugees, supporting youth in crisis. They all need funding. Your old couch, your kids' outgrown clothes, and that kitchen set collecting dust in the basement can become meals at Feeding Champlain Valley, shelter beds at COTS, or a furnished apartment for a refugee family through USCRI Vermont.
Our partner causes
We've partnered with over 25 vetted local organizations across Chittenden County. When you donate, you pick the cause. Our launch partners include:
- COTS - Emergency shelter and transitional housing for Burlington's homeless
- Feeding Champlain Valley - Four food shelves fighting hunger across four counties
- USCRI Vermont - Resettlement support for refugee families since 1980
- Spectrum Youth & Family Services - Drop-in services for young people ages 12-30 in crisis
- Humane Society of Chittenden County - Rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming for animals
- Lund - Strengthening Vermont families for over 135 years
If you don't have a preference, we'll direct your proceeds to whichever partner needs them most.
What we believe
Donation is not disposal - it's participation in a gift economy. So many things already exist. The design challenge is logistics and access, not production. We built GiveBetter to make the circle visible: your unwanted items become someone else's funding, and you get to see exactly where it goes.
